AEDs: More Effective and Easier to Learn Than CPR

!±8± AEDs: More Effective and Easier to Learn Than CPR

For decades, when someone's heart stops beating, CPR has been the standard and most effective form of first aid. CPR is taught in classroom and community centers throughout the world, led in great part by the American Red Cross, who urges all Americans to become certified in the correct methods and techniques of giving CPR. However, new and increasingly affordable technology is now viewed by many as easier and more effective than CPR. An Automated External Defibrillator, often called an AED, may be a far more powerful tool for saving lives. Impressively, defibrillation via an AED is far easier to perform than CPR, even for someone without any training.

AEDs are lightweight, portable devices that can jumpstart a victim's heart by using an electrical pulse called a biphasic shock. Guiding the rescuer with a combination of simple and clear voice, text and graphical instructions, AEDs do nearly all of the work, enabling practically anyone save a life!

As opposed to CPR, which can easily be done incorrectly, too slowly, or too shallow of compressions so that the heart is left unaffected by the efforts and will not restart on its own, an AED is easy to use and can actually restart the heart with just the push of a button. Using the same technology found in emergency rooms, operating rooms, and doctor's offices all over the world, an AED can not only help an individual suffering from cardiac arrest until professional medical help arrives, it can literally save their life. Phillips, Zoll, Heartsine and other companies manufacture very portable defibrillators that are surprisingly affordable, and refurbished models are often available for under ,000, according to AED resource Web site Start A Heart/>.

Generally speaking, performing CPR is a great deal more complex than one may believe. Training and refresher classes are incredibly important to ensure that you not only perform the motions of CPR in the correct method and speed, but also know the appropriate times to perform CPR. Many AEDs however, use sophisticated software and simple voice commands to analyze a patient and instruct the operator on how to restart a heart. These AED devices are found in airports, schools, public spaces, and private homes all across the country, providing an advanced option in case an emergency requires resuscitation.

Many individuals do not have the strength or stamina to properly perform CPR, since the activity takes a great deal of energy to correctly perform in order to receive the best results. Furthermore, you may need to perform CPR for an extended amount of time depending on where the victim is currently located and how easily accessible they are by emergency medical staff. In contrast, individuals of all strengths can use the AED device, since it requires the individual merely to push a button in order to jolt the heart back to life using a shocking stimulation. Generally speaking, it only takes one or possibly two shocks to the heart in order for the victim's heart to properly respond, allowing the individual working the defibrillator to perform other medical tasks that my be necessary.

As they become increasingly common, you will find an AED in nearly every public place. However, you should still ensure you know the proper methods associated with CPR in case you need to assist someone and are unable to access an AED.

AED Defibrillators - Understanding How Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) Work

!±8± AED Defibrillators - Understanding How Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) Work

The human heart beat is powered by chemical impulses produced by special cells called pacemaker cells. These cells are often affected by external stimuli-- medication, stress, and physical activity, just a few things that change body chemistry; altering chemical impulses, increasing or decrease heartbeat. One of the most well-known and often misunderstood external heart stimuli is defibrillation.

Defibrillation is the administration of a jolt of electricity to the heart which depolarizes the heart muscle and allows the heart's natural pacemaker to potentially reset and continue beating. Defibrillation is performed by devices called defibrillators, which vary in design and ability. Currently, the familiar TV and movie trope of defibrillator paddles being used on flat-lining patients is outdated. More commonly, defibrillation will occur via the prophalayctic nodes, which are attached to the chest of the patient and also used to monitor heart rate. These nodes deliver shocks when a shockable heart rhythm occurs. Unlike TV shows, a shocked patient does not convulse, usually there is only a small amount of muscle contraction throughout the body. Also, unlike media portrayals, a flat line is usually an 'unshockable' rhythm. Ventricular fibrillation is a 'shockable' heart rhythm and is when the ventricles quiver rather than work in a pattern. Ventricular tachycardia, another shockable rythmn, is an extremely fast rhythm in which there is a loss of pulse. Certain types of cardiac arrhythmias may not be shockable depending on severity and rhythm type. Defibrillator devices in hospitals are usually not completely automatic, but are very similar to the completely automatic AEDs by Cardiac Science, Zoll, Phillips HeartStart, and Samaritan.

The Cardiac Science Powerheart G3 Portable AED Defibrillator is designed to be easy to use in an emergency cardiac arrest situation. The Powerheart Portable Automatic External Defibrillator features a text screen, convenient for noisy and chaotic environments, which runs in tandem with the voice prompts. The device displays the patient's heart rate, the waveform, number of shocks delivered, and the elapsed time. The Powerheart Defibrillator features built in automatic synchronization and pacemaker pulse detection.

The Zoll AED Plus is a unique unit in that it is completely automatic, but also it is the only full-rescue AED, walking the user through the full "Chain of Survival" by supporting CPR. Not only does the Zoll AED Plus track a shockable heartbeat, it also tracks chest compressions by the rescuer and advises on pace and compression strength. The Zoll AED Plus provides Real CPR help, providing visual and audio feedback and instructions. The HeartStart OnSite AED likewise provides audible commands when in use, and walks the rescuer through potential defibrillation, if a shockable rythmn is detected. The Samaritan PAD Public Access Defibrillator AED is especially designed for public access use. All of these AEDs use verbal and visual prompts to guide the rescuer. The AEDs let the rescuer know when to touch and when not to touch the patient. If a shock is required, there will be a visual clue.

Methods for maintenance or AED

o There are many ways to keep your mouth CPR kit in perfect condition. Checklists AED play a key role in maintaining AEDs. The inspection data should be saved for future recordings.

Checklist of daily maintenance, or EDA: The EDA must be cleaned every day, so it is free from dust, dirt and impurities. The AED device should be placed at the point where clearly visible andaccessible. The daily check list includes parameters such as checking the status indicator, battery installation, audible visual alarm service, and external components and sockets for cracks. The daily check must be trained by someone who can carefully examine the availability of equipment will be made.

Checklist or maintenance AED Monthly: A monthly check should be made by the AED Coordinator to verify the functionality of the devices. The auxiliary-AED as a pad, pocketMask, gloves, razors, gauze, PC cards and batteries should be checked every 30 days. The expiration date on the package should be checked to ensure there are no obsolete or accessories to be in the field. One of the most important factors in the AED monthly checklist to perform a battery load test (BIT) test entry before repacking AED devices after use.

or American Red Cross CPR and AED has developed programs to provide confidence and awarenessin the general population. In addition to programs for professional rescuers, there are programs that serve to provide CPR and defibrillation, if someone has a sudden cardiac arrest in your family or the community prepared for the sacrifice. The function of automated external defibrillators

!±8± The function of automated external defibrillators

Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are not very dissimilar from what many of us for years on medical shows or have seen in hospital emergency room. The device consists of an irregular heartbeat or fibrillation, which affects the proper flow of blood, but in contrast to the standard defibrillators, the automated external defibrillator can be used by any citizen, even those with little or no medical training.

When a person experiences cardiac arrest or heartAttack, a defibrillator is placed on the chest and an electric current is channeled via electrodes or paddles, or shock. The shock is to increase the patient's heart rhythm and again in a chaotic shooting the normal range, so that it blows back to normal flow. But in the case of automated external defibrillator, or AED, the device determines if a shock is appropriate, and if so, what level of energy is needed to revive the patient. You can not ignore theDetermination of the DAE and then an inexperienced person without medical training need not worry about not to use the defibrillator on a patient in cardiac arrest really.

This has dramatically reduced the risk of abuse AED become a fixture in various public forums such as airports, casinos or sports arenas. There have been many cases where people, especially older people or athletes who have met with sudden cardiac arrest can be saved only by the presence of aautomated external defibrillator.

One brand of AED available to the public, the Zoll AED Plus has many features that make use of the defibrillator as easy as possible for a person with little or no medical training. It includes a graphical user interface and voice prompts, the user is walking, step by step through the entire process, as well as a pad that eliminates the confusion of an electrode on the patient's body. Zoll AED Plus runs alongside theconventional batteries, promising comfort and cost savings.

The American Heart Association strongly supports the placement of automated external defibrillators or AEDs in public places in which immediate cardiac care may be necessary. Other key targets are shopping malls, gated communities and office complexes.

For those interested in purchasing an AED for use in their community or organization can the FDA requires a prescription for the device. Theirlocal EMS system can assist in determining protocols for local and state ownership and management of an AED.

There are also AED training and education courses through the American Heart Association. This course is the new Heartsaver AED course combines CPR and AED training.

With automated external defibrillators, or AEDs The dip that have been made to avert potentially life-saving cardiac arrest are available to the public with a very lowRisk of abuse or mistreatment. As more and more AEDs in public areas continue to appear, is the hope that the tragic consequences of a sudden cardiac arrest or heart attack can be reduced significantly, what the ordinary people the chance to be a hero.

AED - The importance of automated external defibrillators (AEDs)

!±8± AED - The importance of automated external defibrillators (AEDs)

AED defibrillator training for non-medical matters, especially for people in occupations where the risk of cardiac arrest is high. First manual defibrillators require much training. Users of these models would be able to visually interpret the patient's cardiac arrhythmia on a screen displayed on the defibrillator. Through proper analysis of the rhythm, the user should determine whether defibrillation is needed, the rhythm, and in this case, the user manuallyshock. Forces of the hospital and ER physicians TV shows screaming, 'Clear! "While the use of blades on the plate covering the patient. This is only a presumption of art.

Defibrillation is a skill for professionals in emergency care, high quality reserved - paramedics, nurses and doctors. In the '90s, thanks to advances in technology, the development of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) has made it possible for lay people with minimal training to operate the defibrillationRestore the proper heart rhythm and save lives.

AEDs analyze the electrical activity of the patient, whose heart and determine if a shock is necessary. However, some knowledge is helpful so that the device is more effective and are used to ensure the safety of players and spectators. Training ensures that the AED correctly give the maximum benefit and the highest probability of survival for patients used.

Sudden cardiac arrest means the heart stops suddenly and abruptlyto beat. It can strike anyone at any time, but usually is caused by a heart rhythm disorder called ventricular fibrillation. This rhythm is caused by abnormal and very fast electrical activity in the heart. VF is chaotic and disorganized, the heart just quivers and can not effectively pump blood. VF will be short lived and will deteriorate to a flat line, if not treated immediately. It is not always a heart attack. Heart attacks are severe and sometimes lead to sudden cardiac arrest, butSudden cardiac arrest can occur independently, and without signs of a heart attack. Sudden cardiac arrest is fatal if not treated immediately.

The new antiepileptic drugs are working with a microprocessor in the defibrillator. The microprocessor analyzes the victim's heart rhythm through adhesive electrodes. Then he recalls the audible operator if a shock is needed. AEDs advise a shock only for ventricular fibrillation and rapid ventricular tachycardia. The electric current isvictims provided by the chest wall through adhesive pad. The system is secure so that a shock to someone whose heart rhythm requires defibrillation are not provided.

These new smart defibrillators from companies such as customs are found in health clubs, hospitals, schools and hospitals. Flight attendants, firefighters, personal cruise ship, the police, health club employees, security guards, paramedics, lifeguards, golf professionals, students, doctors, nursesHouses, apartments, restaurant staff and emergency services company should be trained in their use. Despite its ease of use, should still be the sequence of life-saving familiar to all, regardless of profession or situation.

Cardiac arrest can occur at any time, and as already mentioned, not always due to a heart attack. First, someone should call the victim's 911th Then pulse should be checked to ensure that the person has a heartbeat. And 'possible, they haveonly fainted. Check the airway. Make sure that the person is breathing. If the pulse is weak or nonexistent, an AED should be placed. Begin chest compressions to help the heart beat. The risk of flat-lining after it has revived the top, so make sure that the rescuers to stay with the victim, health care or emergency services to arrive. The first few minutes of cardiac arrest are critical for survival.

When every second counts⦠You canât afford NOT to have the ZOLL AED PlusIn the chaos of a sudden emergency, imagine a calm voice stepping you through the chest compressions you must administer to save the victimâs life. The voice reassures you when your compressions are effective and warns you if they are too weak. This scenario can be a reality with the ZOLL AED Plus -- the only automated external defibrillator (AED) that also guides rescuers through the entire Chain of Survival, including checking responsiveness, CPR, and defibrillation. Providing early CPR and defibrillation to victims of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is essential to maximizing their chances of survival. No other AED provides CPR guidance like the ZOLL AED Plus. Real CPR Help provides voice prompts, text, and pictures to clearly demonstrate when and how to perform the necessary life-saving steps. But the advantage doesnât stop there. Real CPR Help actually monitors the rate and depth of the compressions you administer to the victim in real time. Voice prompts confirm that your compressions are satisfactory or tell you to push harder if needed. The metronome makes it easy to establish a proper pace of compressions. Even the exclusive one-piece electrode pad features a fail-safe design to go on easily and show you where to place your hands for compressions. ZOLL defibrillator FAQs

!±8± ZOLL defibrillator FAQs

What is sudden cardiac arrest?

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) simply means that the heart unexpectedly and suddenly stopped beating. This is usually caused by a heart rhythm disorder called ventricular fibrillation (VF).

SCA is the same as a heart attack?

No. A heart attack is a condition in which blood flow to the heart muscle is suddenly blocked, resulting in the death of heart muscle. Heart attack victims usually (but not always) experience chest pain andusually remain conscious. Heart attacks are serious and sometimes cause sudden cardiac arrest. However, SCA can occur independently, and without signs of a heart attack. SCA leads to death if not treated immediately.

Who is at risk of sudden cardiac arrest?

While the average age is about 65 victims of SCA, SCA is unpredictable and can strike anyone, anywhere, anytime.

What is VF?

VF is an abnormal heart rhythm often seen in SCA. This rhythm is an unusual and very rapid riseheart's electrical activity. VF is chaotic and disorganized, the heart just quivers and can not effectively pump blood. VF is of short duration and worsen asystole (a flat line) if not treated immediately.

VF is treated as?

The only effective treatment for VF is an electrical shock called defibrillation. Defibrillation is an electric current to the chest. The electric current flows through the heart, with the aim of stopping the VF and gives the opportunity toto take normal heart's electrical system control. This current helps the heart's electrical activity so it can pump blood again. An automated external defibrillator (AED) can defibrillate the heart.

What is an AED?

An AED is a device that analyzes and tries shockable heart rhythm, advises the rescuer and the need for defibrillation shock when necessary.

Will I hurt the victim with an AED?

If the people on that is accessible and not usedBreathing is the AED is extremely safe. Decision of the AED shock victim's heart rhythm and defibrillation is based only a shockable rhythm.

What happens if I forget the steps for using an AED?

The steps for shocking a victim of SCA are simple and direct. The request AED Plus ® provides audible and visual instructions for the entire resuscitation. The hardest part is recognizing the need for defibrillation.

Should I apply or CPR firstElectrodes AED?

Just CPR until the AED arrives. Apply pads to the victim's bare chest and follow the voice prompts and messages of the AED. They tell you when to resume CPR.

If defibrillation is so important, why should I do CPR?

CPR provides some circulation of oxygen-rich blood of the victim's heart and brain. This circulation delays both brain death and the death of heart muscle. CPR also makes the heart more likely to respondDefibrillation.

I can be quoted with an AED?

Until now, there's never a case where someone can be held liable for the use of an AED was, but as you know, anyone can be sued. Similarly, many states have "Good Samaritan" laws to protect passersby from claims made.

Can I accidentally shock another rescuer or myself?

AEDs are very safe when used properly. The electric shock is programmed to go from one electrode to another through the victim's chest pad. BasicPrecautions, as a warning to others verbally and visually checked the position clear the area before and during the shock, is almost the safety of the rescuers.

What happens if the victim of a patch of drugs or ECG electrodes on the chest where the electrodes should be placed?

Never AED electrodes directly on the patch drug, like nitroglycerin, or EKG patches. The patch should always be removed and cleaned the skin dry before applying the electrodes toSkin.

I have to remove the electrodes from the principle of rebirth?

No, the electrodes remain for the entire resuscitation until the victim is transferred to advanced care providers such as paramedics. When the electrodes are in their correct position on the chest of the victim, that does not interfere with proper hand placement or compressions.

I was the AED if the victim with a pacemaker or is pregnant?

Yes withhold AED never use in a person forSCA.

I defibrillation on a wet surface?

Yes, provided that the usual safety rules are followed. Make sure the victim's chest dry. Keep the pads away from a damp or conductive.

I defibrillation on or near a metal surface?

Yes, provided that the usual safety rules are followed. Keep the electrode from contact with the conductive surface. Make sure you allow anyone to touch the victim when a shock is administered.

How much of theThe victim's clothing should be removed for defibrillation?

The chest should be exposed to allow placement of the disposable electrodes. A woman's bra should be removed. Clothes should be cut.

Why is it so important to make sure that the electrodes adhered firmly with a clean, dry chest?

Successful defibrillation requires electricity to flow from one electrode to another through the chest pad. When the electrodes are firmly adhered and there isSolder or other conductive material between the electrodes, current flows through the breast are more likely to take place. This will result in ineffective defibrillation and an increased chance of sparks and fire.

Is it okay to place the electrodes directly on a hairy chest?

Electrodes must come in direct contact with skin. If the chest hair is so excessive as a good adhesion of the electrode pads to prevent the hairs must be removedquickly.

What happens if I have a child victim?

It is recommended that pediatric electrodes, which have a charge less than the child in SCA.

After successfully defibrillated the victim, I think on the electrodes?

Yes, even after the victim was defibrillated successfully, he / she is at risk of developing VF again. The AED will continually monitor the victim for the return of VF. VF is suspected, the AED will automatically begin analyzing the victims after two minutesCPR has been completed. The AED should be left to gather the forces responsible for the victim.

What happens if the victim wins a pulse but not breathing or slow breathing?

It is recommended that rescue breaths at a rate of 1 every 5 seconds or 12 minutes to access.

In the past I have asked an AED on a victim of SCA and the AED is always "No Shock Advised." Even with CPR the victim did not survive. Why is the AED shock this victim?

Although VF is the most common heart rhythmArrest, is not the only one. The AED will only shock VF or VT (ventricular tachycardia), which is a very weak but fast heart rhythm. There are other heart rhythm associated with ACS, who are not treated with defibrillation. A "No Shock Advised" message does not mean that the victim's heart rhythm returned to normal.

I was shocked a woman in SCA few minutes after it collapsed. I learned later that did not survive. I did something wrong?

Unfortunately, due to otherUnderlying medical conditions or heart problems, not all victims of SCA who are in VF will survive even if defibrillation is promptly and correctly.

What happens if I'm not perfect all the steps of CPR and defibrillation?

SCA is a situation of high stress. Even experienced health care professionals do not do everything perfectly. In SCA, the resuscitation and the use of an AED can only help the victim.

What happens if I'm not sure if I can use an AED?

Remember this rule: onlyThe use of an AED on someone you would do CPR on - no more and no breath.
